The honest read
The full three-signal core at a price that doesn't make you sample, plus the layer most tools charge extra for or skip entirely: error tracking, uptime with status pages, SLOs and change tracking — all included rather than sold as add-ons.
Breadth. New Relic and Datadog have RUM, session replay, profiling, Kubernetes explorers and hundreds of prebuilt integrations. Those took years and large teams. If you need them today, you should buy them today — we'd rather tell you that than lose your trust in month two.
Maturity and ecosystem. Loki, Mimir, Tempo and Pyroscope are battle-tested at a scale Whale has not seen. The trade is operational — that's four stateful systems for your team to run, against a hosted product for us to run.
No per-language auto-instrumentation agents — Whale leans on OpenTelemetry SDKs instead. That's a deliberate bet on the standard rather than a missing feature.
Cost
Commercial observability is priced on ingest, which is why teams sample away the data they most want during an incident. The open alternative usually means running three or four stateful systems. Whale's bet — the same one SigNoz, Uptrace and ClickStack made — is that a single columnar store collapses both problems at once.
One published migration puts a comparable OTel logs, traces and metrics workload at roughly $35–60K/yr on ClickHouse against about $400K/yr on Elasticsearch. That's someone else's workload and someone else's numbers, not a Whale benchmark — but it's the shape of the difference, and it's why we chose the engine before we chose anything else.
